WRITER'S PARADISE A revision checklist Save a copy before you begin. You don't have to fix everything in one pass. PASS 1: THE STORY [ ] Can I explain what the main character wants? [ ] Do the important decisions make sense from their point of view? [ ] Have I given the reader the information needed to follow the action? [ ] Does the ending connect to what came before? [ ] Have I noted anything that needs setting up earlier? PASS 2: THE SCENE [ ] What changes during this scene, or what other job does it do? [ ] Where did my attention slip? [ ] Is there information I've already given the reader? [ ] Does the scene start where it needs to? [ ] Is there a moment I should slow down and let the reader experience? PASS 3: THE SENTENCES [ ] Read aloud and mark places where the rhythm trips me up. [ ] Check repeated words and descriptions. [ ] Look for unclear pronouns or confusing shifts in time. [ ] Check dialogue: who is speaking, and what are they trying to do? [ ] Proofread names, spelling, and punctuation. ONE CHANGE TO TRY FIRST: ONE THING I WANT TO KEEP: QUESTIONS FOR A READER: These are prompts for a closer read, not rules every story must follow.
