Backup Restore Rehearsal
Verify a selected ZIP backup against a SHA-256 manifest and rehearse its restore in a new disposable directory.
The problem it solves
Backup Restore Rehearsal verifies a selected ZIP backup against a SHA-256 manifest and rehearses its restore in a new disposable directory.
Who Backup Restore Rehearsal is for
- People who need a small, purpose-built utility instead of a broad platform.
- Users working with backup, restore, ZIP who want the documented v0.1.0 behavior.
- People who prefer an open-source release with visible limitations, source, and license terms.
Intended result
Verify a selected ZIP backup against a SHA-256 manifest and rehearse its restore in a new disposable directory.
This summary is reconciled from the current catalog and repository documentation.
Features in v0.1.0
Capabilities below come from the current project README and release documentation.
Rehearse a user-selected ZIP restore into a new disposable, manifest-verified target.
MIT licensed. Runs locally without an account or external service. See GitHub Releases for downloads.

Changelog
Release notes from the canonical v0.1.0 source tag.
- Added one explicitly selected ZIP backup plus a supplied schema-1 SHA-256 manifest. Inspect the entire selected archive and verify its file set and hashes before extraction; restore only to a random newly created disposable child under an explicitly selected parent; rehash every restored file before reporting success.
- Add CRC-corruption, inclusive size/count boundaries, reparse-attribute and native Windows junction regression fixtures.
- Added synthetic examples, regression tests, usage documentation and MIT licensing.
- Added version-checked release packaging with SHA-256 checksums.
Quick start
The shortest documented path into the current release.
Before running these source commands, download the v0.1.0 source archive, extract it, and open a terminal in the extracted project folder containing README.md. Follow the tagged README for required runtimes and any platform-specific setup.
python -m pip install .

backup-restore-rehearsal inspect synthetic.zip --manifest synthetic-manifest.json
# Review the inspection result, then choose an existing private output parent.
backup-restore-rehearsal restore synthetic.zip --manifest synthetic-manifest.json --parent . --reviewedCurrent limitations
These boundaries are part of the product and prevent the page from implying unverified capability.
ZIP stored/deflate only. No tar, 7z, RAR, encrypted archives, disk images, application-aware recovery, metadata/permissions restoration, or automatic backup discovery. Limits: 64 MiB compressed archive and total expanded bytes, 16 MiB per file, 2,000 entries, depth 16 and expansion ratio 100. All symlinks, junctions, reparse points and special members are rejected, including links within the target; this deliberately excludes some legitimate backups. This is a rehearsal, not a production recovery utility or proof that an application can open the restored data. Select a trusted local parent not writable by other accounts; this MVP does not defend against a hostile process running as the same user concurrently replacing directories or mutating files.
Privacy and licensing
Review the actual data boundary before using a tool with sensitive inputs.
Privacy and safety
The tool has no discovery, scheduler, network or credential integration. No real backup is accessed without an explicit archive argument. Only selected archive/manifest files and generated disposable targets are touched. Never pass live backup directories, production destinations or sensitive files to issue reports. Failure after target creation retains the partial disposable directory for inspection; no cleanup deletes user data.
License and release
Backup Restore Rehearsal is published under MIT. The current cataloged release is v0.1.0, published 2026-10-15.
