Folder Manifest Postcard
Create read-only folder inventories and compare complete version 2 metadata postcards for added, removed and size-changed paths, with explicit scan uncertainty.
The problem it solves
Folder Manifest Postcard Folder Manifest Postcard creates a compact Markdown, HTML, or JSON summary of a directory's file count, folder count, total size, extension mix, and largest files. It reads metadata only and never reorganizes the folder.
Who Folder Manifest Postcard is for
- People who need a small, purpose-built utility instead of a broad platform.
- Users working with folders, inventory, files who want the documented v1.1.0 behavior.
- People who prefer an open-source release with visible limitations, source, and license terms.
Intended result
Create read-only folder inventories and compare complete version 2 metadata postcards for added, removed and size-changed paths, with explicit scan uncertainty.
This summary is reconciled from the current catalog and repository documentation.

Changelog
Release notes from the canonical v1.1.0 source tag.
- Preserve literal POSIX backslashes in serialized path identities while rejecting absolute paths and traversal components.
- Include a complete metadata inventory in version 2 JSON postcards and compare it with
--compare. - Report added, removed and size-changed paths with explicit uncertainty for inaccessible, excluded and symlink paths.
- Keep version 1 comparison unsupported because its largest-file summary is incomplete.
- Added read-only directory metadata scanning with exclusions and symlink skipping.
- Added compact Markdown, self-contained HTML, and JSON postcards.
- Added extension summaries and largest-file evidence.
Quick start
The shortest documented path into the current release.
Before running these source commands, download the v1.1.0 source archive, extract it, and open a terminal in the extracted project folder containing README.md. Follow the tagged README for required runtimes and any platform-specific setup.
python -m pip install .
folder-postcard ~/Documents --output postcard.md
folder-postcard . --format html --output postcard.htmlCommon repository, dependency, and virtual-environment directories are excluded by default. Additional glob exclusions are explicit. Symlinks are skipped rather than followed, user-supplied names are escaped in HTML, and existing output files are refused.
The postcard is a compact inventory, not a backup, duplicate detector, malware scan, or proof of file integrity. Requires Python 3.10 or newer.
